Cyclone Ula: Latest Update

At 5:00pm local time, Severe Tropical Cyclone Ula (941 hPa) Category 4 was located at 20.4 degrees South 170.7 degrees East, about 95km east southeast of Aneityum and 180 KM east southeast of Tanna. Severe Tropical Cyclone Ula has moved in a southwest direction at 13 KM/HR in the past 3 hours. Winds close to the center are estimated at 165 km/hr and continue to intensify. Expected position of the system in the next 6 hours will be near 21.4 degrees South 170.2 degrees East. Damaging Gale force winds of 65 to 75 km/hr will continue to affect TAFEA province today.

Heavy rain and possible flooding in low lying areas and areas close to the river banks including coastal flooding are expected over TAFEA province. Very rough to phenomenal seas with heavy swells are also expected.

The Vanuatu National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) advises that RED Alert is still in effect for TAFEA province. Vanuatu Red Cross is urging people in TAFEA Province to move to safe shelter immediately, ensuring they take with them an emergency kit/supplies and that any elderly or disabled neighbours and/or family are accounted for. They should also listen for updated via radio broadcasts where possible. 

Vanuatu Red Cross staff and volunteers are on standby with relief supplies in place should they be required.

CYCLONE ULA: LATEST UPDATE

A red alert has been issued by the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-hazards Department for TAFEA Province as Category 4 Tropical Cyclone Ula moves close to  Vanuatu's southern islands. Winds close to the centre are estimated at 165 kmph. 

Damaging gale force winds and heavy rainfall with possible flooding over low lying areas and areas close to the river banks are expected to affect TAFEA Province, particularly Futuna, Aneityum and possibly Tanna islands. Very rough to phenomenal seas with heavy swells are also expected. 

Red Cross is urging people in TAFEA Province to move to higher ground and safe shelter immediately, ensuring they take with them an emergency kit/supplies and that any elderly or disabled neighbours and/or family are accounted for. Listen for radio updates where possible.

Red Cross is on standby with relief supplies in place should they be required.

Vanuatu Red Cross recently joined organisations such as UN Women, Department of Womens Affairs and the Ministry of Justice and Community services in honouring the UN’s global 16 Days of Activism campaign. 

The campaign kicked off with a parade through the streets of Port Vila, followed by a range of activities organised by various organisations to promote their chosen ‘International Day’ of focus. This year Vanuatu Red Cross took the lead on White Ribbon Day/‘The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women’ activities. Their Australian Red Cross supported campaign focused primarily on the issue of sexual and gender-based violence during disaster.

Vital Relief Supplies allocated ahead of Cyclone Season

Vanuatu Red Cross is sending locally sourced and life-saving relief supplies to islands across Vanuatu to help communities best prepare for the cyclone season. 

Relief goods such as containers to collect clean water, pots and pans for cooking and tarpaulins for shelter are being positioned in key communities across all six provinces of the country. “The relief supplies will enable the most vulnerable people to get the support they need as quickly as possible when disaster strikes,” said Vanuatu Red Cross CEO, Jacqueline De Gaillande.

Vanuatu Red Cross Society in collaboration with the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-hazards Department co-hosted a four-day climate workshop from November 11th-13th in Isangel (Tanna) aimed at increasing community awareness and understanding about the current El Niño weather event.

Many communities on Tanna Island face serious food and water shortages as a result of the current El Niño-related drought and lasting damage from Tropical Cyclone Pam.  The current El Niño event is one of the strongest global weather patterns on record and has resulted in drier-than-average conditions not only in Tanna, but Vanuatu-wide. Many of these drought-affected communities are still recovering after being severely impacted by Tropical Cyclone Pam.

This week, a team of Vanuatu Red Cross trainers and volunteers commenced the facilitation of a series of ‘Safe Shelter Awareness’ workshops aimed at assisting 900 households in communities across West Tanna to rebuild their homes in a way that they will better resist future natural disasters such as cyclones and earthquakes.

Vanuatu Red Cross Society’s annual gala night took place on Saturday 31st October at Warwick Le Lagon Resort in Port Vila. Proceeds raised from the ‘Bollywood’ themed fundraiser will go towards Red Cross’s El Nino response, in particular towards the purchase of two portable desalination units, which will help affected communities across Vanuatu to access potable drinking water.

Tropical Cyclone Pam: Six Month Progress Report Launch

Red Cross was the first organisation to carry out official relief operations, distributing essential supplies to affected people in the first month following Cyclone Pam. Six months on, we've provided assistance to an estimated 39,915 people affected by TC Pam in Vanuatu.

The first few months following the cyclone focused on relief – making sure that people could survive in the aftermath of the disaster. Now, the focus has moved to longer term recovery, to reconstruction and to being better prepared for future disasters. Following the relief activities, the recovery priorities for Red Cross in Vanuatu are to provide the means for cyclone-affected households to rebuild their damaged houses, have safe places for refuge and improve access to safe water, especially considering the increased likelihood of extended drought caused by El Nino.
