From 12th to 15th of April, in Sola, the VRCS/FRC organized a consultation workshop on the development of the Provincial Disaster Plan (PDP). This provincial workshop was organized in the frame of a disaster risk reduction project funded by EU humanitarian aid and implemented by the VRCS/FRC in partnership with 25 communities of Torba Province.

The workshop was designed to collect information from and to get consensus within the Provincial Disaster Committee (PDC) and Area Council Secretaries (ACS) to develop the Provincial Disaster Plan (PDP) for Torba Province. This plan will help the Provincial Government and communities of Torba Province - composed of numerous scattered islands where some of the remotest communities in Vanuatu live - to be better prepared in case of natural disaster and to organize an efficient response.
During participatory exercises including risk mapping of Torba Islands and table simulations, participants were asked to provide feedback and recommendations based on a PDP template, which will then be compiled by the VRCS/FRC and transmitted to the Vanuatu National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) for validation. The plan will give a legal frame to disaster preparedness and response mechanisms and define each actor’s roles and responsibilities in times of peace, disaster and response at the provincial level.
More than 20 PDC members (representing most of the provincial department) and the 7 ACS for Torba Province came over to participate in the four-day workshop along with NDMO representatives and the Secretary General for Torba Province Mrs. Ketty Napwatt.
